Sukhothai was surrounded by a substantial City Wall in ancient times and parts remain even today. The fortifications had three concentric walls and two moats. There were gates in the centers of the sides with guards controlling zig-zag entrances. The walls enabled Sukhothai to remain Thailand's capital (its first) from mid 13th to late 14th century.
